World Hindi day celebrated on January 10

World Hindi Day is celebrated globally on 10th January every year.

The day is commemorated every year on January 10th with the objective to promote use of Hindi language abroad.

The 1st World Hindi Conference was organized on 10 January 1975 in Nagpur, Maharashtra by then Prime Minister (PM) Indira Gandhi. It was attended by 122 delegates from 30 countries.

The World Hindi Day was observed first time in 2006.

MS Swaminathan & Dr. Gutta honoured with 1st Venkaiah Naidu National Awards

Eminent Agricultural Scientist Prof. M S Swaminathan and Dr. Gutta Muniratnam were chosen as the first recipients of Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu National Award for Excellence and Muppavarapu National Award for Social Service respectively.

Prof. M.S. Swaminathan was awarded for his significant contributions in the field of agriculture. Dr. G Muniratnam was awarded for his extraordinary contribution to improving the quality of people’s lives through social service.

Govt plans 1,023 Fast Track Special Courts for rape and POCSO cases

Central Government under the scheme ‘National Mission for Safety of Women (NMSW)’ will be setting up 1023 Fast Track Special Courts(FTSCs) for fast and time-bound completion of the trial relating to sexual offences, for more stringent provisions the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act

Out of the 1023 FTSCs, 289 courts were proposed in 2019 to be set up exclusively for POCSO Act related cases in Districts having more than 100 such cases.

5th edition of ‘The pulses conclave 2020’ will be held in Lonavala, Maharashtra

India Pulses and Grains Association (IPGA), the nodal body for the country’s pulses trade and industry on announced that the 5th edition of “The Pulses Conclave 2020”, will be held from February 12-14 in Lonavala, Maharashtra.

The aim of the conclave is to discuss increasing domestic production and consumption and improving processing efficiencies, increasing consumption, exports, value addition, protein extraction, post-harvest crop management.

HDFC completes majority acquisition in Apollo Munich

The Housing Development Finance Corporation Limited (HDFC) has bought 50.80 per cent stake in Apollo Munich for Rs.1, 485.14 crore and 0.36 per cent shareholding of employees for Rs.10.67 crore.

Apollo Munich Health Insurance company renamed as HDFC ERGO Health Insurance Ltd.

The acquisition was approved by the Competition Commission of India (CCI), the Reserve Bank of India and the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI).

Famous chariot festival of Suchindram Thanumalayan Temple begins in Tamil Nadu

The famous chariot festival of the Suchindram Thanumalayan Temple, the southern most major temple in Tamilnadu, began on 09 January 2020.

This 17th-century temple is famous for its architectural grandeur. It is said to be one of the tallest statues of its type in India.

Suchindram Temple, also known as Sthanumalayan Temple is located in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu.

SBI lowers GDP Growth to 4.6% in FY20 from 5%

The State Bank of India (SBI) has lowered the economic growth forecast to 4.6 per cent from the earlier 5 per cent.

The latest SBI Ecowrap report even predicted growth rate to remain below 6 per cent for the two years in a row.

Pedro Sanchez Takes Oath as the Prime Minister of Spain

The leader of the Socialist party in Spain, Pedro Sanchez, took the oath as the prime minister of the country on 08 January 2020, after winning confidence vote by an extremely tight margin in 350-seat chamber, with 167 votes in favour and 165 against.

Virat Kohli retains top spot in ICC Test Rankings

India skipper Virat Kohli retained his top spot among batsmen while Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane slipped in the latest ICC Test rankings.

Pujara was placed sixth, down one rung, with 791 points, while Rahane occupied the ninth spot after slipping a couple of positions with 759 points.

World Bank lowers India’s FY20 growth estimate to 5%

World Bank on Wednesday lowered its growth estimate for India to 5% for the current fiscal from the earlier projection of 6%.

World Bank’s Global Economic Prospects report stated weakness in credit from non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) as one of the primary reasons behind the growth rate cut.

However, the bank has expected that in the next FY- 21, India can improve its growth and this figure can reach 5.8 %.
