Veteran Writer Manoj Das receives Mystic Kalinga Literary Award

Manoj Das, who was recently bestowed with Padma Bhushan for his outstanding contribution to English and Odia literature, received Mystic Kalinga Literary Award for the year 2020 in the category of Indian and Global Languages.

Union Cabinet clears the setting up of Vadhavan Port in Maharashtra

The cabinet has given its ‘in-principle’ approval for setting up a Major Port at Vadhavan near Dahanu in Maharashtra at a cost of Rs.65,544.54 crore.

The new Major Port will be established on the basis of land lord model.

A Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) will be formed with Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) as the lead partner.

This is part of the government’s plan to develop infrastructure projects with a cost of ₹100-lakh crore over the next five years.

Karnataka govt launches Janasevaka scheme to provide Govt services at Home Delivery

The Karnataka government launched the Janasevaka scheme in certain municipal corporation wards to provide home delivery of various government services like ration cards, senior citizen identity and health cards.

The Scheme was launched by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, and the scheme will contain 53 services from 11 departments.

The beneficiary will have to place the request for the service through the website or Phone. Jan Sevak or a delivery executive will be assigned to deliver the service to the citizens

The main objective of the scheme is to ensure on-time delivery of government services and make the lives of the citizens of Karnataka Easy.

Greenbone Sustainable Resilience, a German cybersecurity firm, has published a report on medical data leak, Maharashtra topped among the Indian states which has been hit by global medical data leak.

Medical details of over 120 million Indian patients have been leaked and made freely available on the Internet.

Supreme Court directs states to issue notification for establishing ‘Gram Nyayalayas’

The Supreme Court has directed the states to establish Gram Nyayalayas within four Weeks. Gram Nyayalayas are mobile village courts established under Gram Nyayalayas Act,2008.

The Gram Nyayalayas should be established for every Panchayat at the intermediate level or a group of contiguous Panchayats at intermediate level in a district.

A bench headed by Justice N V Ramana also took into account the fact that several states have issued notifications for establishing Gram Nyayalayas but all of them were not functioning except in Kerala, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.

MSME implemented a new scheme named SFURTI

Ministry of MSME is implementing a ‘Scheme of Fund for Regeneration of Traditional Industries’ (SFURTI) Scheme under which financial support is being provided for setting up of traditional industries clusters viz. Khadi, Coir & Village industries clusters.

Its aim is to develop clusters of traditional industries in the country over a period of five years, to make sustainable development, employment and strengthen governance systems for traditional rural industries.

RBI hikes insurance cover on bank deposits to Rs 5 lakh

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has increased the Insurance cover on bank deposits to Rs 5 lakh from Rs 1 lakh.

Deposit insurance was static at Rs 1 lakh since 1993. The cover is provided by the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC), a wholly owned subsidiary of the RBI.

The DICGC does not directly charge any premium from the depositor on this insurance. So Now Banks will pay a premium of 12 paise against 10 paise per Rs 100 deposit.

The deposit insurance scheme covers all banks operating in India, including the private sector, cooperative and even branches of foreign banks.

For the current fiscal 2019-20 (FY 20), GDP is projected at 4.6 %.

This estimation is less than what the central government had estimated in the Economic Survey 2020, presented just a day before the Union Budget for 2020-21.

Amazon partnering with Eastern Railways sets up pick-up kiosk in Kolkata.

Amazon India has partnered with Eastern Railways inorder to set up a pick-up kiosk at the Sealdah railway station in Kolkata, West Bengal.

A kiosk is a small open-fronted hut or cubicle from where newspapers, refreshments, tickets will be sold.

This tie up with the Amazon India, will help Indian Railways meet its freight and passenger earning targets.

Vinod shukla wins first Mathrubhumi book of the year 2020 award

Eminent Hindi poet-novelist and Sahitya Akademi awardee Vinod Kumar Shukla has won the inaugural Mathrubhumi Book of the Year award.

He won the award for his translated book “Blue Is Like Blue “.

Arvind Krishna Mehrotra and Sara Rai have translated the stories of ‘Blue Is Like Blue’s into English.

Punjab government bans online lottery schemes

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh decided to ban the sale of all types of online lottery schemes in the state.

The ban, under Section 5 of the Lotteries (Regulation) Act 1998, would not only check illegal lottery business but also give a boost to the state’s tax and non-tax revenue.

9th edition of India-Bangladesh joint military exercise SAMPRITI-IX begins in Meghalaya

The 9th edition of the annual joint military training exercise by Indian and Bangladesh armies named ‘SAMPRITI-IX’ was flagged off on 3rd February 2020 in Umroi in Meghalaya.

The objective of SAMPRITI-IX is to provide basic counter-terrorism training for mountainous and jungle locations.

Maldives rejoins Commonwealth as 54th member

Maldives officially re-joined the Commonwealth on February 1, 2020 and became the 54th member of the Commonwealth Union.

Maldives joined the Commonwealth in 1982 and withdrew its membership in 2016 upon the decision of the then President Abdulla Yameen over the charges of corruption and deteriorating human rights in the country.

Madhya Pradesh bags first position for implementation of PMMVY

Madhya Pradesh (MP) state won the 1st position for its implementation of Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY).

Madhya Pradesh’s Minister for Women and Child Development Imarti Devi and Principal Secretary Anupam Rajan received the award from Union Minister of Women and Child Development Smriti Irani for the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana in the state of Madhya Pradesh.

Indore district has also bagged the first place among the districts for better performance of the scheme.

Indian Navy Conducts Coastal Security Exercise ‘Matla Abhiyan’ in Kolkata

Indian Navy has carried out a 5-day long coastal security exercise called, ‘Matla Abhiyaan’ at Sunderban region in Kolkata, West Bengal.

This exercise is conducted to spread awareness about the coastal security to the local community & understand the navigational complexities in the Sunderban delta waters.

During the exercise, the Navy interacted with the local community to make them aware of the coastal security and also carried out activity to understand the navigational complexities in the Sundarbans Delta.

Indian para-athlete and Padma Shri awardee Deepa Malik elected as President of the Paralympic Committee of India.

The 49-year-old Deepa malik from Haryana is the first Indian woman to win a medal at Paralympic Games.

Deepa Malik won a silver in shot put F-53 event in the 2016 Rio Paralympic games.

Pramod Agrawal became the new Chairman & Managing Director (MD) of Coal India Limited (CIL).

He was the successor of Anil Kumar Jha who retired on 31st January 2020.

Diplomat Shri Gopal Baglay has been appointed as the Next High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka.

The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) banned Indian weightlifter Ramshad AR for a period of 2 years after he was found guilty of violating the anti-doping rule.

Indian wrestler Ravinder Kumar was banned for a 4-year period by NADA for failing the dope test.
